“Live Life Backwards”

On a brisk October night
with the moon near full,
Life kissed me after many years;
all I felt was chapped lips
and bitter breath.

Is life the everchanging
or am I – maybe both.

There was a time
when emotion tugged
daily at my sleeve.

I smelled liliac bushes
in the morning
and fresh cut Bluegrass
at night.

During the day
it was Mom’s baking,
ballgame popcorn,
brownies near done,
my aunt’s apple pie

It’d be better to live life backward.
To prepare to appreciate all there is
and will be.

Time to prepare to live when living
is so much easier.
Live through the pain;
then taste the reward.

Doesn’t work that way though;
except for the brownies.
